World Population Animation

Zero Population Growth

JavaThis animation is a simple version of the World Population Video from ZPG (see box below). It was written in Java by What Now, Inc. The source code is located in the file World.java. The background image is in the file globik21.gif

The animation goes from the year 1 A.D. to 2020 A.D. It draws a total of 16,384 dots; each dot represents about 367,000 people. If you click on the image while it is drawing, it will stop temporarily; click again to restart it. If you click on it after it is finished, it will restart from time 1 A.D.

The animation needs some work: unlike the video, it does not show the year (or symbols representing the time period). And if you hide the window containing it, the background image does not get redrawn.

World Population Video

Educators agree that World Population is the best-ever graphic simulation of human population growth. As the years roll by on a digital clock from 1 A.D. to 2020, dots light up on a world map to represent millions of people added to the population. Historic references on the screen place population changes in context.

As one of our most popular teaching tools, the video is featured in museums, zoos, and aquariums around the country, including the new Hall of Biodiversity at the American Museum of Natural History

This renowned 6 1/2 minute videocassette includes a 12-page activity and discussion guide, including a Spanish translation of the video's narration.
