Cabaret, Haiti is located about 45 minutes north of the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The population of Cabaret is approximately 80,000. Most residents in the Cabaret area live in extreme poverty. The majority of families live in simple thatched or tin roofed homes with neither running water nor electricity. Cooking is done over charcoal fires, something that has contributed to a serious deforestation problem in Haiti. Formal employment opportunities are almost nonexistent. Livelihood is accomplished primarily by farming small plots of land. Between outdated farming techniques and a growing population, Cabaret is in serious need of assistance with the most basic needs of life.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel was established as a parish in 1907. The feast day of the parish is celebrated on July 16th. The pastor at OLMC is Pere (Father) Guy Chrispin. Pere Guy was ordained in Port-au-Prince in 1986. He was assigned to OLMC in 2001. When Pere Guy arrived, he found a large parish without any form of financial assistance in place. Out of the 80,000 residents in Cabaret, about 64,000 are Catholic, 18,000 of whom are practising Catholics. When Pere Guy first arrived at OLMC, there were only about 50 active parishioners. Today, the church is packed, with hundreds standing through Mass. In Pere Guy's own words, "We are poor, but we are rich - rich in humility, rich in love, rich in Christ. What we lack in material goods gives our prayers beauty and power before God. If you are able to help your sister parish in some way materially, we will pray for you in return. Whose benefit will be greater?"
