G1029 Canister Filter Conversion

My conversion is based on the example shown on Wynn Environmental's 9E300BL Conversion page. I used the 9E300BLFR filter (99.99% efficient at 0.5 micron). Wynn now sells filters which match the diameter of most dust collectors, removing the need for the plywood baseplate. I bought the clear bottom bag from Penn State.

When adding a canister filter to a single-stage (non-cyclone) dust collector, it is very important to keep the filter clean. It is best to use a pre-separator, and it also helps to add a neutral vane to direct dusty air down into the lower bag of the dust collector. My homemade neutral vane is shown here.

With my "Mini-Cyclone, 2-Trashcan separator" almost no dust makes it to the lower bag at all, keeping the filter very clean. Here is the completed filter conversion, and the mini-cyclone separator. The silver coating over the dust collector is duct insulation, added for sound deadening (reduced noise by 2 db).

First, I measured and cut a plywood baseplate, since the filter I chose is smaller in diameter than the midsection of my dust collector. I cut my baseplate with a circle-cutting jig on my bandsaw, and used a jigsaw to cut the inner opening.

I attached a section of 8" diameter snaplock pipe to extend down into the lower bag, to emulate the design of a cyclone a bit, causing more of the dust to stay in the lower bag. This works with the neutral vane mentioned above.

The filter is bolted to the top of the baseplate, using wingnuts for easy filter removal. I trimmed the corners of the filter flange to make it fit within the baseplate diameter.

I applied weatherstripping under the outer edge of the baseplate, to ensure an airtight fit.

After placing the baseplate and filter on the dust collector, I caulked to ensure there were no leaks. Gravity and the caulk hold it in place quite well.

Here is the 8" snaplock pipe descending into the lower bag area, ensuring that most of the dust which makes it past the separator stays in the lower bag.
