ABOVE
1960 Luscombe 8F - This was the second to last Luscombe built. It had a C-90 Engine and Factory Flaps. It had red trim and dated interior when we purchased it. We re-polished it and had the interior refreshed. It took grand champion that year at the Arlington Air Show in WA state. (that's me on the left and my father on the right)
A Little About Myself and My Family
Hello. You've found your way to Tom's Hobbies Page. My name is Tom. I'm 32 years old. I've always been interested in things with engines and various outdoor hobbies, especially vintage dirt bikes and street bikes. I'm usually one of the younger people at the vintage bike rallies. I've been riding bikes since I was in 7th grade and lived and breathed them growing up. I also enjoy flying and antique aircraft. My father has been into flying for 30+ years and has owned/restored a number of antique aircraft. I soloed in a Piper L-4J which is the military version of the famous J3 cub.
To support my many hobbies and to be able to experience a wide variety of "Toys" I always sell one toy to get the next. This allows me to experience a lot of different hobbies but it also means that I don't usually keep one vehicle for very long. I'll have fun with one until something else catches my interest. There are lots of them I wish I had back! Below are some pictures of past and present toys and my families adventures.
Feel free to e-mail me with any questions or comments at the bottom of the page.

Motorcycles & Scooters
Motorcycles have always been one of my biggest hobbies. I've owned quite a few of them over the years and had fun with them all. I still like BMW's and Vintage bikes the most. Below are some of my past and current bikes, some I really wish I had back!

Victor Minibike
Another rare minibike! A Honda powered Victor Minibike. I wish it had all of its parts.
Tom Thumb Minibike
10 years or so ago I bought a large box of vintage Popular Mechanics Magazines at a yard sale. One of the 1970 magazines had a article on how to build a "Tom Thumb" minibike. I've always wanted to build one since reading the article so my Father and I finally decided to do it. I found a NOS Ohlsson & Rice engine on E-bay like the one they used in the magazine and we were on our way. We kept it pretty much as per plans with a couple minor exceptions. We Tig welded the frame instead of using rivets like the plans called for (way more durable). I also made a engine mount plate that welded to the frame so you can slide the engine to adjust the chain, they used u-bolts. I also installed the engine in the vertical position since I thought it looks better. It came out really well. Now its my pit bike that I bring to bike shows.
Aircraft
My fathers first love has always been flying. Growing up he lived and breathed flying like I did motorcycles. He's owned many antique planes over the years, even restored a couple. He opened a Jump school in Toledo WA and taught sky diving for several years. He also flew commercial hot air balloons for 14 years. He taught himself aerobatics in a Ryan PT22 while still on his student ticket. I solo'd in a Piper L-4J (pictured above), the military version of the famous Piper Cub. Our last plane we owned was a 1960 Luscombe 8F. We are getting ready to get another plane. It's looking like it will be a Cessna 140A or a Piper J3 Cub at this point. Here are some pictures of my fathers planes he's owned over the years.

1960 Luscombe 8F
This was my father and I's last plane. It was the second to last Luscombe built and had factory flaps. It was a very pretty plane and a lot of work to keep polished. Polished planes just look soooo nice!

My father and I
This is my father and I in front of his 1929 Pitcairn Mail Wing. It was a early night air mail plane that he restored. I'm just bigger than the tires! It was the only one left flying of its type.

Mike's Mooney
This was my Uncle's Mooney. It's a very fast airplane for traveling but costs a lot to own and opperate. He finally sold it for something a little easier on the pocket book.

Me on my fathers old hanglider
The old Pheonix Delta Kite. My father and Uncles used to hang glide with this kite back when it was state of the art. It's way to dangerous of a design to fly now. We took it out to a local sand dune and played with it though. A real museum piece.

Mike and I
Taking a ride in the Mooney. My uncle flew over to visit in the Mooney and we took it out for a morning flight. My fathers in the back seat taking the pic.

Air Command Gyro
This is me taking instruction on an Air Command Gyroplane. Gyro's are a kick in the butt to fly, a real magic carpet ride. Some day I would like to get another gyro.
![]()
Mike's Kolb
Mike bought this after the Mooney for a local play toy. Small "experimental" planes are a lot of fun and a practical way to get into flying. One like this is around $10,000. Cheaper than a car!
![]()
Mike's RAF 2000
Mike owned this RAF2000 Gyro for a while. It's an enclosed 2 plave gyro with a Suburu Legacy engine. They are very nice ships.

Pitcairn Mail Wing
1929 Pitcairn Mail Wing. My Father restored this plane. In the 80's He sold it to Cole Palen of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in NY where it still lives today. Cole Palen flew it strait through from Vancouver WA to NY in 33hrs, in the middle of winter!

180 Cessna
One of my fathers 180's that he's owned over the years. A 180 is a very good plane, they are also pretty pricey now days.
![]()
Ryan PT-22
This was my fathers Ryan PT-22. He tought himself aerobatics in this plane while he was still a student pilot. Here he was flying from Kelso WA to Kennewick WA over the horse heaven hills. A stock paint scheme looks much better, never did like the sunburst design on that PT22.
![]()
Fixin the Ryan
My father and his friend did a 9 turn spin and when they pulled out it broke a rib in the center section. Later he found out the PT22 was only rated for a 3 turn spin! Here's a shot during the repair work. A loud metalic pop is never a good sound when your in the air!

46 Piper J3 Cub
The Legendary J3 Cub. My father lived in this cub for 6 years. You can really learn a lot about flying from flying a cub. They are a great stick and rudder airplane. We are currently looking for one of these.
![]()
Cub on a sand bar
My father landed on this sand bar at low tide. It was softer than he thought and they drug the plane down to the water line and pulled the tail right back to the water. Just made it back off with two of them aboard. My father used to land everywhere with the J3.

Aronica C3 - "Flying Bathtub"
I've always though the 1930's C3's were cute, in an ugly sort of way. My father just thinks they are ugly. Not sure who's this one is, pic was taken at an air show in the 60's.

Me in the B1RD
An early ultralight, the B1RD. My father met someone who let him take it for a flight to try it out, this was taken after he got back to the airport and I was playing around in it.

Cherokee 6
My Grandfather and his Cherokee 6. Our family has relations back in Missuri so they would fly the Cherokee from WA state to Missuri and back to visit. My Father and Grandfather would take turns flying and navigating.
![]()
My Fathers first plane
My Father and Grandfather went halves on this Cessna 172. They both learned to fly in it. It was the only tri-cycle geared airplane my father has ever owned. I like to refer to them as nose draggers.
![]()
Stearman
My father owned this Stearman for a couple years. It had just came out of restoration when he bought it. He traded his J3 Cub in on this plane. A Stearman is a great plane and built like a tank. They also are very expensive today.
![]()
Dominator Gyroplane
I owned this gyro for about a year. The Dominators are a very good gyro with many safety features. If your interested in gyro's a Dominator is a good one to look at.

Another Shot of the J3
You have to love the J3. One of the most enjoyable planes to fly.
![]()
Cessna 140A
My father next to his 140A. He owned this one in the early 80's. the 140A had metal wings, a 90hp engine and better flaps than the strait 140's.

J3
You've probably noticed my now that we really like cubs. Thought I would throw in yet another shot of my Father and his old J3.

Scooters
The last couple years I've been involved with the vintage scooter scene. My wife and I both belong to a local scooter club called the Bombastic Scooter Club. We go on local rides, travel to distant rallies, throw seasonal parties and hold a killer rally right here in Tri-Cities once a year. The club has a great bunch of people and we always have a fun time. I have just as much fun on the scooter as I do on the Buell, its just a different type of fun. What would normally be boring on the Buell becomes a challenge and a kick on the scooter. If you haven't tried one you really should! Above is my 62 Lambretta TV175 Series II. It's an original Italian Scooter. It has a 175cc 2 cycle engine and a 4 speed trans. It will do 60mph.
Here are some pictures of our club and our scooters

The Bajaj is also styled after the 80's P series Vespas. It has a 150cc 4 cycle engine and a 4 speed manual trans. It's a great around town commuter scooter that gets 100 mpg and will do 60 mph.
Our Trips to the SE Deserts of Eastern Oregon
Every summer my family takes a week long camping trip into the Deserts of SE Oregon. We usually bring dirt bikes to explore the different areas. We pick a different place to explore every year. A few years ago I bought a Mercedes Unimog which is an extreme off road vehicle made my Mercedes. My particular truck was an Ex-Swiss Military Vehicle. After my purchase of this truck one of my uncles also bought a Unimog, my father and other uncle bought a Pinzgauer, which is another Ex-Swiss military vehicle that is hand made in Austria. They are also very capable of f road vehicles. We decided to drive them to the Alvord Desert that year. We brought along several dirt bikes and a couple three wheelers and we had a great time! We found several abandoned mines to explore, and tons of great riding. Since then we have all sold our military trucks and have moved on to different hobbies. Below are a few pictures of our yearly desert trips and the trucks. Click on the thumbnails to make them larger

Mercedes Unimog
This was my Mercedes 404 Unimog. It is extreemly capable off road. Diff Lockers on both axles, Portal axles, 112:1 in low range, super arliculation. Just to slow on the road, 50mph.

Pinzgauer Radio Truck
My uncle Mike had this Pinzgauer Radio Truck. It was in very good cond. It was a little faster on the road than the other vehicles. Kinda like a VW bus on Steroids!
![]()
Heald Super Tryke
This is something you don't see every day. A Kits By Heald Super Tryke. It was pretty fast, 50mph but gave a real bouncy rough ride. My father finally sold it go get something a little more comfortable. Still cool though.

Mine Audit
This is the third old Cinibar Mine that we came across. There were two very deep winzes in the back of this mine. Mines are very dangerous and best left alone, that being said we had a great time.
![]()
Fat Thing
My Uncle Mike rides the "Fat Thing" or the Suzuki RV90 as its better well known. This little bike really gets around the desert good. 90cc 2 cycle. Mike really likes it.
![]()
Resting by a Mine Shaft
We climbed up to take a look at this mine shaft. The old ore cart was still up on the hill. There was a OLD wooden ladder heading down into the shaft but its way to dangerous to attempt climbing. Great view of the Alvord dry lake in the background.
![]()
Hiking the Steens
We rode the bikes up into the Steen Mountains that overlook the Alvord. Here we stopped to do a little hiking. My cousin Austin the the white and my cousin Alex.
![]()
Alvord Hot Spring
Out in the middle of the dry desert is a super nice hot spring. We would ride our bikes to it every night for a soak. It's on private land but open to the public so please be respectful.

XR in the Desert
This was my XR400R. I stopped to take a picture on the lake bed. What a great time!

Sand People
Every night a sand storm would blow through. Everyone had ways of dealing with it. Here my Father and Uncle Mike are all dressed up in their sand gear.

Guano Lake
Riding around Guano Lake. The vast area of nothing streches for as far as you can see. You could see the Steen Mountain range way off in the distance. Pictured is my Yamaha YZF400.

Dry Lake Bed
We were heading across this dry lake bed when it turned to mud. Nasty mud! We managed to gas it and get out before getting stuck. My friend Travis on the left and my bike on the right.

Lava Caves
We stopped and explored some lava tube caves on the way home. Some of them go pretty far under ground.

Another Abandoned House
It's always fun to explore an abandoned house. This is another one we found on the trip. There was still water in the hand dug well, although it was green.
![]()
Phone Call
This is the only place we could get cell service. It was a 15 mile one way ride from camp to this hill to make a call.
![]()
Pinzgauer 712M
This was my fathers Pinzgauer. It has lockers on all three axles and will go just about anywhere. Makes a great safari rig. Here we all went for a 4 hr safari ride.
![]()
The Big Rock
Alex and Austin stopped to climb onto this big rock. It was sitting right at the base of the Steen mountains.
