I had a hard time finding any start up infomation for this type of business, but I know there are people doing it. My best advice is to find a niche to work within, and go from there. Cartoonist - Not every cartoonist makes it into the big newspapers, but not every cartoon is in a big newspaper! (Though, shoot for the stars, I always say!) Chimney sweep - I know a man who used to be a firefighter, but on his days off was a chimeny sweep! Black top hat, a coat with tails and all! Cleaning service (house or commercial) - The second person I knew to have a home based business, back in the early eighties, owned a residential cleaning service. She had two work cars and up to 8 employees! You can also start a refferal service, where you have a list of 'independant contractors' that you refer to home owners and business owners that want to get their houses cleaned. One company that I know of takes $2-$5 per hour of what the contractor charges (about $12-18 an hour, per cleaner). Recommended reading...
