#2 - Agee? Bay Springs, MS

This photo is of a basket which was brought from Jasper County, Mississippi near Bay Springs in 1888 by the Samuel Jackson Morris family to Bowie County, Texas. At one time it was filled with tomato and pepper seeds which had been dried in the toes of socks. This basket was given to Samuel Jackson Morris's great grand daughter by his daughter Lillian Morris Hays about 1972. It belonged to Fannie Eddins Morris, wife of S. J. Morris. I was told it is a flower basket and that it came from Jasper County, Mississippi. I am sharing this picture of the basket to see if anyone has ever seen one or might know who made baskets such as this one in Mississippi. If anyone has a basket made there, please share what you know about it and send a photo (to the e-mail adress listed below). - C.O.

Another basket from Jasper County, originally owned by Mary Ann Anderson Eddins of the Harmony community in neighboring Clarke County, MS. If you have knowledge of the history of such baskets, please contact me at the listed address. - KW

This April 22-25 Confederate Veteran Medal was found in the upstairs side-room floor of Roscoe Samuel Morris's dog trot home by Carolyn Coleman Ogle who was R. S. Morris's grand daughter. The medal is thought to have belonged to his grandfather William Bennett Morris in Jasper County, Mississippi. His trunk was in the upstairs of his home but was stolen by a Mahaffey boy when other items were also stolen from the home in the 60's. The year of the Medal is not known. Anyone who has another like it or who knows the date could tell me and I would appreciate it very much. William Bennett Morris was a private in the war and his records will soon be posted. Anyone having a photograph of William Bennett Morris please share it with the Jasper County Mississippi Historical Pages. - C.O.

These pages are a work in progress. While every attempt has been made to include accurate historical information, some error may be included. I invite corrections, additional information, additional photographs, and accounts of personal experience. Please contact me at the supplied address. Very little has been documented in regards to the dying towns and landmarks of east-central Mississippi. With your help, I hope to put together a few pages that we all can pass along to our grandchildren. Thanks!
