Jackson Genealogy

My Jackson family is from Middlebury, Addison County, Vermont.  My great grandfather, John W. Jackson, was a private with Company K of the 1st Vermont Calvary during the Civil War.  Sometime after the Civil War, he moved to Essex County, New York, where his first wife, Helen Goodrich, died in 1894.  Two years later, John W. Jackson, married my great grandmother, Mary Rabatoy, (who was some 40 years younger).

In late August 2001, I had a chance to visit Middlebury and I found the Jackson plot in the local cemetery.

I have found two brief mentions of my great great grandfather in the book History of Addison County, edited by H. P. Smith, and published by D. Mason & Co., Publishers in 1886.  An online version of this book may be found at http://www.middlebury.edu/academics/lis/lib/guides_and_tutorials/guides_to_collections/collection_guide-vermont/internet_resources/history_addison_county/

From Chapter XV History of the Town of Middlebury, p. 274 -
"In 1794 Samuel Foot took possession by purchase of the Deming place and occupied it until 1803. In 1797 he sold to Dr. Joseph Clark a small lot, on which he built a house and kept a tavern; the building has been removed and Colonel Lyman E. Knapp has built on the site. In the mean time Mr. Foot added to his possessions, on the west side of the Paper-mill road, a small tract extending northward. In 1799 he sold to William Coon the lot on which John Jackson now lives; the south half of the house here had been built and used for a school-house, and the north part was built by Hiram Seymour, a hatter from Canada, who carried on business during the War of 1812."

From the chapter called Brief Personals, p. xxxv -
Morton, Caleb, Middlebury, was born in Middlebury, Addison county, Vt., on October 7, 1823. His parents were Cyrus and Lois (Morton) Morton. Cyrus Morton was a native of Massachusetts, and came to Addison county, Vt., about 1816, and settled in Middlebury. He was a carpenter and joiner by trade, a trade which he followed for many years. He was a successful man, and had a family of three children, one son and two daughters, all of whom are now living. He was a self-made man and died in 1878. Caleb Morton was educated in the common schools and the academy, and received a very fair education, and learned the trade of his father, a trade which he has followed for many years. He was married in 1845 to Julia Jackson, a daughter of John Jackson, a well-known resident of Middlebury, Vt. He was engaged in the lumber business in Ludlow, Vt., in connection with A. J. Severance.

One puzzle that I'm working on in this family is the son of my great-grandfather, John W. Jackson and his first wife, Helen  Goodrich.  According to information in John W. Jackson's Civil War pension file, William A. Jackson was born April 24, 1866.  I would like to know whatever happened to him.  William was still alive as of July 1, 1898 according to a paper in the pension file signed on that date.  My grandmother never mentioned that she had a half brother, and I'm unsure if she ever met him.   Update!  I believe that I have found out what happened to William A. Jackson.  In 1900 he was living in Burlington, VT with his wife, Mary (born Sept. 1866), and their daughter, Frederica (born in June 1897).  By 1910 they were in Schenectady, NY.  And in 1920 and 1930 they were living in Richmond, VA.  My puzzle now is that Frank Ladue (a blacksmith by trade) was living with them from 1900 to 1930, but he is listed not as being related but rather just as a boarder.

Help!  Here are two old family photos.  I believe that they are from the Jackson family, but I don't know exactly who they are.  Please e-mail me if you have any tips.
