Deerhair bluegill bug

This is a simple fly designed to take advantage of the bouyancy of deerhair without the mess of a spun head. The design of this fly is similar to the Madam x .

Hook:
8-10 light wire Aberdeen or panfish hook, straight eye
Thread: 3/0 uni-thread, color matched to deerhair
Body: dry fly dubbing
Head: stacked deerhair
Tail/Legs: silicone legging material

Tying Instructions.

1) Place hook in vise and attach thread. Advance thread to the start of hook bend and tie in tail.

2) The tail should fork with each strand protruding from either side of hook. Leave the strands about one and a half to two inches long.

3) Dub in a wide tapered body. Reserve about a third of the hook shank near the eye for the head.

4) Cut a bunch of deerhair a little bigger than the size of a pencil and stack it in a hair stacker to align the tips.

5) Trim the butt ends of the hair bundle even.

6) Push the butt end of the bundle hair over the hook eye and up against the end of the spun body.

7) Tie in the deerhair ending just behind the hook eye. Make sure the hair is evenly distributed around hook shank. Advance the thread back to tie-in point

8) Form the head by carefully fold the hair back on itself and secure with thread wraps. When secured the hair should form a round or bullet shaped head and a collar that extends back past the hook.

9) With the thread still at the tie-down point add two strands of the legging material one on each side of the fly with the strands extending more to the rear than the front. Finish with a few half hitches.

10) Coat the head with soft body resin and allow to dry.
