Akito is a shugenja in service to Shinjo Shoji. Her father, Shinjo Arkan, is the caravan master of Shoji's Travelling Court and the father of her four brothers. Arkan adopted Akito after it was determined that she should train under Iuchi Chojuro, the karo to Shoji.

A fine apprentice, Akito has earned the right to be a shugenja in her own right and used to travel with her youngest brother, Shinjo Ratha until his untimely death in Ryoko Owari. She now serves Shoji again, but one wonders how long such an arrangement will last.
