Welcome to Nigatani Villages
The village of Nigatani is an outpost of Falcon lands at the edge of a short, deep river, which is the effective border between Falcon and Hiruma lands further south between MM and TT. The actual border is some 15 miles south, but the “red plains” are basically uninhabited.
The village of Nigatani is the possession of Toritaka Dokurin, who married Hida Ajiko, Hida Goshiri's sister. Dokurin also helped Shinjo Hokido's father recover from injury in his youth.
Before 1104, there was a village on the opposite side of the river, but it was wiped out by the attack of the Oni no Jigabachi. The Falcon built a new village nearby afterwards, ruled by Dokurin’s parents (who have since died). The village produces a fair amount of rice and is adjacent to some woods, which make for excellent bird hunting. Normally a sleepy village, the only time of excitement is in the month of the Tiger, just before spring, during the festival of “early lights,” a time when local villagers, led by their lord, cast paper lanterns onto the river to commemorate the spirits of the formerly dead villagers. Many believe that some of these villagers serve as ghostly warders of the town from evil forces. The river is spanned by a stone bridge, built by the Miya many years ago and modified to be a defensive point in the event of attack from the “red plains,” the old village area, which remains uninhabited except for a few eta and other disreputable characters.
