That it is important to preserve the historic fire tower in its present location on the top of Hurricane Mountain. As of July 2005 the following items have been submitted to the New York State APA and DEC in support of the Hurricane Fire Tower preservation efforts:
- Petitions with 2850 signatures from area residents and other supporters
- Letters from Assemblyman Ortloff, Assemblywoman Sayward, the Elizabethtown American Legion, Essex County Fish and Game, Mt. Fay Fish and Game, and Elizabethtown Fish and Game clubs.
- Resolutions from the County of Essex, Town of Elizabethtown, Town of Westport, Town of Lewis, and Town of Jay, Town of Chesterfield, and Town of Essex.
- Letters from elementary school students from Keene Valley School and Elizabethtown Lewis Central School
This is what you can do to assist the preservation effort.
1) Write a letter. Please send it to us (or copy us) and we will forward
it to the Adirondack Park Agency and the Department of Environmental Conservation.
2) Sign a petition. Copies are located throughout Elizabethtown, Westport, Keene, Keene Valley, Lake Placid, Willsboro, Lewis, and Wilmington.
