Lake Janus

We backpacked the Alpine Lakes region in 2002 to Lake Janus with Paul, Anna and Camile. This trek was via the Pacific Crest trail and Lake Janus was about 3 1/2 miles into our backpacking adventure. Most backpackers continued on up the Pacific Crest trail, so we had the camp site at Janice to ourselves for a short while. We made camp at the lake and did an excursion up to Margaret and Glasses lakes the next day. The weather and views were excellent, and the water in the lake was crystal clear and fairly warm.

Paul and I caught a couple of fish while Yogi chased our bobbers into the water. This is one of the easiest possible backpack trips, nearly flat, and ideal for families provided one times the trip to avoid peak mosquito season. It opens up as early as June. In the early part of the summer there are many creek crossings requiring rock hopping or log balancing. The lake is rather large, pretty, forested, and surrounded by many high peaks.

The Alpine Lakes Wilderness is located in the rugged Central Cascades region of Washington state and is jointly administered by the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie and Wenatchee National Forest. The name Alpine Lakes takes its origin from the nearly 700 small mountain lakes nestled like jewels among the high rock peaks and timbered valleys of the region. Driving directions: From Seattle take I-5 North to Exit 194 to Highway 2 East. Follow the Highway and turn left onto Smithbrook Road #6700 about 0.6 mile after milepost 68. Gravel road starts immediately. Continue on for 3.1 miles to trailhead on the left side of the road.
