Pond Construction
I got pond-fever pretty bad. We had a corner of our backyard that had a pile of dirt and a railroad tie retaining wall that had to go. So, I looked online at ponds and said "Dot, we are building a pond!"  Dot said "Great, Yogi loves water, you and he should do the digging!" Actually, Dorothy did do a lot of digging and we also had additional topsoil trucked in for more plants. Yes, that is a lot of rock, too! We wanted to make the pond Yogi-proof, so the whole pond liner is protected by rock and cement. It is still 3 feet deep in the middle so the fishies will have some diving room!

The small pictures below are of the pond construction last fall. We picked the high corner of the yard and have included a waterfall. We added more plants and filled it with water for the winter, and started on phase 2 in February 2003... a second pond (large pictures)! It is actually an extension of the big pond, a crescent shape around the left side that will spill into the main pond. It's coming along great and should be ready for aquatic plants and more fishies by spring. It is a nice addition to the backyard landscaping and is very soothing, even on rainy days.
It really does attract wildlife, as we have seen various birds bathing in the shallows, and some of our first fish have mysteriously disappeared! On October 9.2003 the most incredible thing happened! A large blue herron landed in the backyard, intent on eating some of my fish! Yogi was on patrol and chased the herron off, sending it packing to find it's dinner somewhere else. Good job, Yogi!
