VPN Remote Access
ITS Networking Services has installed remote access Virtual
Private Network (VPN) gateways for many of our clients. Five of our
clients are regularly accessing their internal LAN's via their Cisco
PIX firewall, which doubles as a VPN gateway. In one instance, an
additional layer of authentication has been provided using a
Microsoft RADIUS server. FLG has also configured several remote
access VPN's using Netscreen VPN gateways.
Our clients with cable modem and DSL access to the Internet
(from home) report a dramatic improvement in network connectivity to
their office networks compared to dial access. The VPN connection
allows our clients to check their mail, access data files on the
company server, and log into secure host systems.
The advent of Windows XP (with remote desktop) opens the door
to many new applications for remote access VPN's. One of our clients
uses the Windows XP remote desktop feature to connect to a server at
the main office to run QuickBooks. This saves her from having to
copy sensitive QuickBooks data to her home PC. It also saves her a
few trips into the office! Site-to-Site VPN
ITS Networking Services has also installed many site-to-site
VPN's. One of our clients wanted a secure network connection to a
business partner, but did not want the expense of a dedicated WAN
circuit. After discovering that both the client and business partner
were using a Cisco PIX firewall to protect their networks, we
configured a VPN connection through the Internet. The client reports
that the connection provides excellent performance.
Another client uses a site-to-site VPN to manage two servers
at a co-location facility. The site-to-site VPN connects the
client's office network with the protected network at the
co-location facility. This allows the client to connect to each
server via remote desktop or PC Anywhere. |
