Access Point Deployment
ITS Networking Services has installed a variety of wireless
access points in the last two years, including 3COM access points,
Linksys wireless routers, and Cisco 1100 and 1200 Aironet units.
ITS installed several Wireless routers for an area
Professional Sports team to allow members of the Press to access the
public Internet while attending games. The units connected to the
wired network on the "untrusted" side of the firewall to prevent
access to the internal network.
Two
other clients requested wireless access points to connect to their
internal networks. These were installed with WEP encryption and with
SSID broadcast disabled. The use of WPA was considered, but rejected
when we learned that Windows XP did not ship "out of the box" with
WPA support.
Rogue Access Point Detection
ITS Networking Services has just developed the capability to
perform scanning for rogue 802.11b access points. We have tested
this capability but have not yet been asked by a client to do
this. |
