Upside Down flyer 2/94
Tori says, "If there's a theme on Under the Pink, it's one of self-empowerment -- whether it's women acknowledging the violence in themselves or people coming to terms with the loss of hope. It's about the refusal to see yourself as a victim, and how to have passion in your life without equating it with violence. It's just as personal and just as involved as before. There might be other characters in these songs that we haven't met before, but it's still me."

Bio 77
Tori says, "I don't think people really understood what Under the Pink was; Under the Pink was an impressionist painting."

Upside Down #6
The spiral photo is a wheel of life. Tori says, "That's what Cindy and I were kind of going for. It was always the Mandola, and how bones become human - become glass - become birds, from the clinical to the flesh - to... There is no beginning or end, that is the point of the photo. It's like the words 'screw you.' Which came first, 'you' or the 'screw?'"

Upside Down #4
Tori says, "The idea for the song always comes first. I doodle to give my mind a break, it diverts my attention. All of those drawings [Under the Pink Song book] were done as I wrote each song, it was not an afterthought for the songbook."

"On Under The Pink I was more influenced by painters, than other musical artists."

Tea with the Waitress
Gena Gwen
In Tea with the Waitress Tori says that Under the Pink means that under our multi-colored skins we are all pink, and well she's gone under that.
