1992 Nissan NX2000

This is how the NX arrived in my possession (on a trailer):

This is how my NX currently stands:

This is a picture of the engine bay as it arrived (it is not pretty) - check out those cam lobes:

This is the engine bay now (still slightly dirty, but better):

Now what is a Nissan NX 2000?

The NX is based upon the B13 chassis which is also the base for the 1991-1994 Nissan Sentra.  What does this mean?  It means all chassis and drive-train components available for the Sentra will correspond to the NX.  The NX was manufactured from 1991-1993.

Information that I have found states that approximately 10,000 NX2000's were produced total from 1991 through 1993.  A rough guess would seem that a maximum of 6,000 NX2000's would be on the road today - possibly less than that.

I purchased the car for $650 in December 2003, and as you can see from the pictures - it did not run on its own power.  The engine bay was pretty rough looking because the previous owner decided to try and fix whatever the problem was with the engine.  They did not succeed.  The rest of the car is in very good condition.  There is basically zero rust - just two small spots.

So what is the SR20VE?  The "SR" is a family of engines produced by Nissan and installed in a number of vehicles.  The more famous of the SR series of engines is the SR20DET - a DOHC 2.0L Turbo engine.  There are actually a few different "DET's" that are made, but the popular one is found in the Nissan Silvia - the Japanese version of the 240SX.  This RWD SR20DET is the most famous, but there are FWD SR20DETs, FWD SR18DEs, RWD SR20DEs, along with the "VE" family.  The SR20VE was only available in Japan, and most easily found in the Nissan Primera (the USDM Infinity G20) from 1997 to 1999.  The VE's are special for their variable valve head design.  Much like Honda's famous VTEC, the VVL (Variable Valve & Lift) of the VE provides basically two sets of cam lobes on a single cam.  One set of lobes is tuned for fuel economy and low-end torque, and the other set of lobes is tuned for high rpm power.  At a certain rpm, the VVL engages causing the valve train to follow the more aggressive cams for the additional power.  The SR20VE is rated for 50 hp more (from the factory) than the standard SR20DE that was found in the NX.  Some of the power is gained from a slightly higher compression ratio, but the majority of the power is found because of the VVL system.  Obviously, addional power can be gained by the addition of typical bolt-on power adders (header, exhaust, etc) or the installation of more aggresive cams from the SR16VE, SR16VE N1 (limited run - 200hp from a 1.6L), or cams that are supposed to be manufactured by Jim Wolf Technology.

The combination of a rather rare car, and a rather rare engine; I would guess that this car is one of less than 50 cars in the US.

The car was finally able to be driven in October of 2004 - 10 months after it was towed to my house; it drove out of the garage on its own power.

The 5 speed conversion required quite a few components other than the obvious transmission.  These parts were graciously donated by the Black SE-R parts car.  The parts car has also donated the front seats, as the SE-R seats are more comfortable and in better condition than the NX2000 seats.
