Midland is a city of about 40,000 people located near the middle of the lower peninsula of Michigan. It is the county seat of Midland County. It is about 120 miles northwest of Detroit and 20 miles west of Saginaw Bay. It is part of the Tri-Cities of Midland, Bay City and Saginaw. It is the home of The Dow Chemical Company, Dow Corning Corporation, MidMichigan Medical Center, Chemical Financial Corporation, Members First Credit Union, Michigan Molecular Institute, Mackinac Center for Public Policy, Snow Makers Inc, Scientific Anglers, Mid Michigan Innovation Center, Modern Metalcraft, Liquid Molding Systems, Wysong Corporation, Dow Howell Gilmore Associates, Gerace Construction, Omni Tech International, Dow Chemical Employees' Credit Union, Wolverine Bank and many other companies and organizations. In 2010, the Midland area was ranked 3rd in Top Metro Areas (under 200,000 population) in nation for "Economic Growth Potential" by Business Facilities Magazine. It was also ranked 3rd as "Alternative Energy Industry Leaders". Fortune Magazine ranked it as one of the four best small cities to raise a family. In 2009, it was named "America's Best Tennis Town" by the United States Tennis Association. In 2008, it was ranked 11th in a study of top micropolitan "dream towns" in the US by bizjournals. For several years America's Promise Alliance has ranked it in the 100 Best Communities for Young People. In 2007, American Music Conference ranked it as one of Best 100 Communities for Music Education.
