Pawnee on desk

Pawnee, a male tabby, joined our pack on the same June 2007 Father's Day weekend as his sister Shawnee, both barely weaned kittens, but not litter mates. Pawnee's original nickname (before Mary named them) was "Stinky" because he arrived with a flavor-filled case of diarrhea. He has been, otherwise, a very healthy cat.

He is the more adventurous of the two, jumping the backyard fence in search of some thing only he understands. He is not allowed to go into the front yard, where the cars are. He also likes to sleep a lot wherever he wants to, such as on the computer desk, as shown here. What you can't see is that he has almost chewed his name off of his tag, a weird thing to do even for a cat and futile since we just bought him another, which he ignores.

Shawnee and Pawnee have always played together. They are both very nice and respectful to Ally, but they mostly leave her alone beyond occasionally touching noses, much to her pleasure. Shawnee and Pawnee use the three cat condos as part of their playing fields, racing up and down and shredding them as they are supposed to, but he also has attacked Mary's living room chair. That has forced us to prevent them from being in the sunroom and my rocker-recliner, when we aren't in there to prevent mayhem. If we cut them some slack, he will nap in my chair (if Ally isn't there first), following my lead.

He is mostly Mary's cat, a mama's boy, and can be frequently found in her lap. He allows me to pet him and to give him treats every morning. My main role is to engage him with the laser light toy, which he chases everywhere and jumps after with total abandon. He knows where the light toy is kept and has learned how to pull open the drawer where it is and try to dig it out. He actually has several toys that fascinate him, including a wind-up hedgehog that shimmies along the folor. He also likes to get behind things, such as file cabinets, the washing machine and other places where it seems absolutely impossible for us to extract him.

Pawnee being Flat Cat

The photo on the right illustrates his interest in always finding the highest perch in whatever room he is and why his nickname now is Flat Cat. He always seem to find places where he can sleep with body full stretched out and his paws hanging down. He is the only cat, of all we have lived with, who sleeps his way. It seems normal to him, but not to us.

Pawnee has little direct interaction with the dogs. He is outside with them more than Shawnee. He likes to hang around the fire ring in the backyard, but he is mostly indifferent to them, although he will occasionally dart after Dakota when he is chasing a ball or loping around the backyard. If the dogs run up to him, he does not react. He just stares at them indifferently, a trait they find boring. He does see the dogs as some sort of protector since he will run and hide behind the bed when the dogs bark inside the house.
