Connecting
an adult with a youth in a Tutor/Mentor program is the BEGINNING of a
tutor/mentor program’s work, not the OUTCOME. |
|
The Tutor/Mentor
Connection (T/MC) seeks to build a community of adults and organizations that
are dedicated to reaching youth living in poverty and to building a
sophisticated, long-term support system that leads them to careers. |
|
This
web site is dedicated to building the capacity of Cabrini
Connections to use GIS computer technology to guide volunteers, donors and business
partners to tutor/mentor locations around |

|
The
maps shown on this web site are just a few examples of computer generated
maps the T/MC has created to show where tutor/mentor programs are needed, why
they are needed, who is already operating, and who could be helping
more. Our goal is to make these
maps interactive, so that a visitor can enlarge sections of the map and can
click on symbols shown to get contact information and web links to the
tutor/mentor sites, schools and other information shown on the map. Below are two examples of how this system
might work. One allows the user to click on a zipcode map and returns a list of programs
available there. The other contains a clickable map of communities. Clicking on an area
returns a zoomed in map of the community with program, business, church, and school location
points linked to detailed information. We're now working
with a team of talented and dedicated volunteers. We seek business,
university and philanthropy partners who value this system, want to use it in
their own community, and don't want to reinvent the cost of creating a system
that could be used by multiple stakeholders in multiple locations. If you are interested in investing or
volunteering time, email tutormentor2@earthlink.net or visit the on-line GIS
planning team at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TutorMentor_GIS_Project/ |

To
gather and organize all that is known about successful
non-school tutor/mentor programs and share that knowledge to expand
the availability and enhance the effectiveness of these services to children
in inner city |
|
This
mission is accomplished through a four-part strategy. 1) It aims to increase
knowledge about what works, where programs are located and where more are
needed. 2) It aggressively shares this knowledge in a marketing and public
awareness campaign aimed at 3) creating a greater involvement of all adults,
and a greater flow of essential resources to individual programs; and a 4)
better understanding among all stakeholders of the long-term, integrated
actions needed to help children and youth move from a birth in poverty to a
job and a career. For each child this is a minimum 25-year commitment. |
