It was a decent day for folks with Pirate pedigree.
Pt.Loma, with senior GK Tara Curtis (PHS class of '00) is now
#20 in the nation NAIA (exciting as that is, #1 and #2 in the nation are in the same conference, so may keep the Sea Lions out of the playoffs). Tara hasn't allowed a goal in league play, though she shared today's 6-0 shutout with soph. Shelley Wilhelm.
Meantime, the Bucs themselves, holding the #5 ranking in Oregon for the third straight week, gained a shutout against Salem's Blanchet Catholic. The Cavaliers have been several rounds into the playoffs each of the past three seasons. For the Bucs, it took 12 minutes to get on the board when Marci Klimek polished off a loose ball generated by Larrisa Wiltrout's hard shot and the Cav GK bobbled save. But play wasn't overly elegant, and as the Bucs were accumulating a lead in shots, corner kicks, and fouls, they didn't add to the lead on the scoreboard until the 58th minute, when Kelly Riley dropped a perfect table setter to the top of the arc where Kat Cox launched it into the underside of the crossbar. Klimek finished it off in the 61st with a put-away of another bobbled save, this time following a rocket from Sarah Kieffer.
Pirate defense of the Dist VI title begins Tuesday at 4 vs Cascade Christian.
