Phoenix's hoops team, which features the Skyline Volleyball PoY Ashley McCarty and Soccer PoY Jaclyn Unruh, captured a share of the league title tonight with a 50 - 32 win at Hidden Valley. Illinois Valley was beating Mazama in Klamath Falls, so both will finish 10-2 and be co-champs. IV should get the tiebreaker nod for the #1 berth, Phoenix will go #2. Unruh led all scorers with 18, Alex Hanscom was also in double figures with 11. Buc footballers Terra Fry and Kim Novak also contributed scoring, rebounding, and solid defense. Unruh, who's soccer season was dedicated to keeping scores LOW, leads all Skyline players with 295 points in 22 games.
The #3 - #5 finishers have a league playoff to get a 3rd state berth figured out. Based on what I have seen, my money is on Henley.
Meanwhile in SOCCER (the reason for this board), the FC Phoenix teams are doing well, sharing the lead alone atop the u19 Classic league at 6-0-0. For Valkyrie, Hidden Valley standout GK has been doing very well minding the net, and North Valley's Kayla Wilhelm has provided consistent offensive output. Our own Tamara Heryford is doing well anchoring the backline and serving key restarts.
Finally, my schedule will have me at Valkyrie/Kaos training on Thursday around 4:30 to work with GKs. The next FC Phoenix contests I can make will be the boys contest this Saturday and the girls' Derby on March 5 (KAOS v Valkyrie). Refereeing assignments include an RVSC v LOSC boys game this coming Sunday AM (9) at Spiegelberg, and RVSC u17 and u19 classic games on March 6 at Colver (11 and 1).
