The Journals of Grace Louisa Haines Gedney
| Grace Haines Gedney was born January 14, 1867 in Gratiot County, MI. She came to Gladwin County when she was 15 (around 1872) with her parents, George White Haines and Tryphena McCreary Haines, and her brother, John Francis and sister, Elnora Lovina Haines. Two more sisters, Olive Estella and Bertha E. were born later in Grout Township. She married Elmer Elsworth Gedney on May 9, 1897 and started a family in Grout Township. She had three sons, Howard M. (b. September 25, 1899), Harry Newton (b. September 2, 1902), and Elwood Lavern (b. March 17, 1913). She also had one daughter, Helen Mildred (b. June 1, 1905). They all lived at the Gedney Family Farm on Gedney Road just down and across from the Grout Township Cemetery. Elmer's parents, James and Matilda Gedney, lived with them, as it was their house to begin with. James died in 1904 and Matilda in 1923. Harry died October 8, 1910 at age 8. Her husband, Elmer died June 13, 1945, at age 76. The first journal I have was started January 1, 1900 when she was 32. In the last journal, the final entry was dated May 13, 1951, 4 ½ years prior to her death on November 27, 1954 at age 87. She is buried next to Elmer in Highland Cemetery in Gladwin. |
