White Rock Mountain directions and maps
Here are directions to WRM:
For those traveling from the northeast, I-44 from St Louis to
Joplin, MO, and then taking hwy 71 south which turns into I-540 to Fayetteville, and then hwy
16 east will probably be the easiest way to get there.
From the north, hwy 71 south which turns into I-540 from KS City is the ticket.
From the northwest,
Tulsa is not much more than 1 hour from Fayetteville.
From the south, take I-540 North from Fort Smith, Ark to Fayetteville and then to hwy 16 East. A more scenic way from the south (read twisty mountain roads, but they are good roads), take I-40 to Ozark, turn north on hwy 23. When you "Tee" into hwy 16, take a left (West).
Getting through Fayetteville to 16 east is kind of messy and I've not found a great route either time I've been there. You have to go through town to do it. My suggestion is to follow I-540 to the Hwy 16 East exit. Then carefully follow 16 through town.
Getting to camp from Hwy 16:
Once you're on hwy 16 east from Fayetteville, go through Combs. Just outside of town, there's a tar road going south (right) just before you get to a small bridge. I don't think it's labeled but that's the road you want to turn on. It will turn to gravel after a mile or so.
If you're traveling West on 16, take a left just barely past the small bridge that you'll cross over just before you enter Combs.
I plan on driving down Thursday so I'll put up some arrows.
Here are some additional directions from Wade Wassinger. Thanks Wade!!
After turning onto Mill Creek it is about a 3-4 mile trek to the trailhead.
The road is gravel and can be a little rough but nothing impassable. The road "Y"s just
before the trailhead-just make sure to stay to the left.
The trailhead area is very easy to see-a outhouse and trail head marker to
the left and a parking area to the right.
BTW, you cross one bridge-if you cross a second low-water bridge (just past
the trail-head) you went too far.
To the camp area on Mill Creek Rd:
The camp area we will be using is just before the Y in the road and about 1/2 mile before the trailhead. It's just a dirt road heading off to the right into the trees. If you go by it, just turn around at the trailhead and come on back. There's no camping allowed at the trailhead itself. Again, I'll put some arrows up to the camp area.
Here are directions from Branson down to WRM
Provided by Stewart Hall:
Just reverse these to get up to Branson from WRM.
From Branson, take 65 south to hwy 62 west to hwy 412 west to Huntsville.
Take hwy 23 south to hwy 16 west. You will go about 2-3 miles and turn left
on Mill Creek Road or FR 1508 not sure how it is marked.
Maps:
Here's a map of Mill Creek Road. I didn't do an "X marks the spot" thing on it because I'm not exactly sure where to put the X. The GPS coordinates of the camp area are:
N 35.77039
W093.85962
Here're link's to the trail map and legend of the WRM riding area, thanks again to Wade Wassinger.
