James A. Hatherley

James A. Hatherley holds a BA degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, has earned several professional designations, and has also completed Executive Development training at Wharton. Nevertheless, he refers to his days at the renowned Boston Latin School as his most meaningful formal learning experience. The every-day-for-six-years requirement of translating abstract Latin text into conversational English provided him the the training and the skill for translating abstract stories and everyday events, lessons form children's books and video games, the intricacies of lily pads, and Swiss watches--even hacksaws, poached eggs, gymnastics, and garden mums--into everyday business context.

In his more than twenty-five year career as a manager and leader, from front line supervisor to general manager and corporate officer, Jim has developed and implemented insightful, unique and practical leadership theories that motivate employees to excel and to deliver exceptional results by liberating them to challenge their personal limits.

In Daring To Be Different: A Manager's Ascent to Leadership, Jim combines his experience, business wisdom, comical narrative, and an interesting metaphorical writing style with useful leadership tools to produce a business gem. Where else can an aspiring manager turn to understand how the lessons learned from the stories of an inn keeper's concerns about a 12-point buck, an artist's theory about bold colors and subtle tones, and a fraternity brother's inability to execute in a key moment are essential elements to their development in becoming a leader?
