Make A Quilt
In many instances where our blankets are delivered to a recipient, it is the first time this child has received a NEW blanket. It may be hard to believe, but it is true. For this reason I have adopted all guidelines from our National Headquarters and have some of my own in place. Please be sure to read these as some changes have been made.
What type of blankets do we accept for Project Linus? We accept all styles of handmade quilts/blankets. They may be tied or quilted in any pattern. Fleece blankets may be either single or double layered with tied fringe. Crocheted or knitted afghans make wonderful, warm afghans. All blankets must be made from 100% washable material in friendly, child prints and solid colored material. Quilts must have either a lightweight polyester or cotton batting.
What types of blankets are not acceptable? 1. 20,000 children under the age of 18 months were diagnosed last year with respiratory problems and of those, 15,000 required hospitalizations. These were cigarette smoke related illnesses. For this reason, Project Linus has adopted the policy of no longer accepting any blankets that smell of cigarette smoke. The smoke smell can be removed temporarily, but not completely. The residue left in the material and batting can not be removed at all. 2. Any blankets that smell musty or moldy will be disposed of immediately to avoid contamination of other stored blankets. The musty/moldy smell can be eliminated; however, nothing can eliminate the mold spores in the fabric. Fabrics stored more than 1 year have a greater the risk of becoming musty smelling or moldy unless they are stored in a dry environment. 3. I will not accept blankets made with compressed polyester batting or old bedspreads in lieu of batting. The compressed batting causes the blankets to become too heavy for small children. In the past, some blankets have been donated with old bedspreads used in place of batting and I have not been able to distribute these to children. Please use a new lightweight 3-oz. polyester or cotton batting.
Are there restrictions on the other fabrics? As always, we prefer fabrics to be made with 100% cotton calico prints or solids in friendly, child colors and prints that are appropriate for age and gender. 100% cotton flannel with friendly, child prints and solids are acceptable as well. Please do not use polyester double-knits, linens, wool, upholstery fabric, vinyl, burlap, drapery or kitchen curtains fabric, or corduroy.
What sizes are needed for Project Linus? All sizes of blankets are accepted. They range from: preemie to twin bed size for teenagers. The smallest size we use is 21" x 21" for preemies. Teenager size quilts should be at least 60" x 72" or larger. Please contact us directly to find out what our current need is for size of blankets.
What type of blankets do we accept for Palliative Care blankets? The requirements for Palliative Care blankets are the same as for Project Linus. We accept all styles of handmade quilts/blankets that are made with 100% new and completely washable material. They may be tied or quilted. Since the Palliative Care blankets are used for adults we ask that you use adult theme patterns such as wildlife or woodland prints, bird fabrics, flowered prints, etc. We do not accept purchased blankets.
What sizes are needed for Palliative Care blankets? Twin size.
Are there restrictions on the other fabrics? As always, we prefer fabrics to be made with 100% cotton calico prints or solids. Please do not use polyester double-knits, linen, wool, upholstery fabric, vinyl, burlap, drapery or kitchen curtains fabric, or corduroy.
Are there any special requirements? Please keep in mind that our blankets will be comforting terminally ill patients. Some of those patients receiving our blankets may have allergies, asthma, chronic pulmonary problems or other illnesses. For this reason I will not accept any cigarette smoke filled quilts or musty/moldy smelling quilts.
