HOW DOES TECHNOLOGY AFFECT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT?

Technology impacts students in a variety of ways. Methods of teaching can be greatly enhanced. I use Power Point instead of overhead notes. My students create desktop publishing projects to show they have met a content standard about the 1st five presidents. At the end of the year, they create webpages about slavery and the Civil War.

In my class the use of technology allows the students to develop self-confidence, time management skills and organization. In 80% of the classess their 4th quarter GPA was higher than the 3rd "Spring Fever" did not occur!

Using technology in education requires constantly reminding ourselves what our objectives are - What do we want the children to achieve? Does this piece of software "really" teach the skill? Here's wht I think we should do about kids and technology: Have them use it the same way WE use it.

I find students willng to do just about anything if it is on the computer (very motivational). They will do skill and drill exercises (like times tables) that I could never get them to do on paper. Kids do it willingly on the computer, giving them drill practice necessary for mastery. Epals - WOW! Geography (kids are much more excited to learn about a place when they have contact with some one from there), written expression, connecting reading and writing, writing for a purpose.
