About Spring Prairie Lutheran Church

Spring PrairieLocated at a rural crossroads, Spring Prairie is a vibrant and welcoming congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The congregation draws members and visitors from a wide geographic area.

Spring Prairie Lutheran Church celebrated its 165th anniversary in 2012. The Spring Prairie congregation was founded on March 28, 1847 beneath a large oak tree. Pastor Johannes Dietrichson, a Norwegian immigrant, carved a cross in the tree’s bark saying, “We must have the sign of the cross for we are to celebrate Holy Communion here today.”

Today, the Spring Prairie congregation continues to worship with the same love of Christ as their ancestors in the faith. Today, 324 baptized persons make up the Spring Prairie congregation. Our purpose statement is growing in faith … reaching out in love. Worship is at the center of what we do – word and sacrament.

In addition to regular worship, Spring Prairie is active through the following ministries:
  • Education for all ages
  • Summer Vacation Bible School for the community
  • Music ministry
  • Family and inter-generational activities
  • Prayer Chain
  • Faith in Action through CROP Walk, Habitat for Humanity, Quilts made for foster children, food drives, Christmas giving tree and partnership with many local agencies
  • Community Outreach
  • Prairie Coffeehouse which provides a space for the community to gather and hear great music several times a year
