On May 23, 1996, Roger Clemens became the 7th Red Sox pitcher to bat since the inception of the designated hitter. With the exception of Tim Lollar, who reached base safely as a pinch hitter in 1986, Clemens is the first Red Sox pitcher to get a base hit as a pitcher up at bat since the inception of the DH rule.
