Challenge:
|
Data from a Phase IV clinical study was being accumulated in a ClinTrial Oracle database. The only access the staff had to this data was through tablular
reports. There was no facility that would allow physicians to visually understand how effective the treatments were or to spot trends that might
indicate that changes to dosages or frequencies were needed.
|
|
Solution:
|
Developed a cross-platform (Windows/Macintosh) solution that allowed client to produce publication-ready patient case reports (PCR) that provided physicians with
a comprehensive look at all clinical data for a patient in both graphical and tabular form. The effectiveness of the solution relied heavily on an
object-oriented design. The graphs were heavily-nested objects. Each object understood how to display or print (via Postscript) itself and
command each object it contained to display or print.
|
|
Challenge:
|
Clinical data was recorded by client-physicians using paper forms. When these forms were received, they were keyed in twice to ensure an accurate
transcription. A time-consuming, manual review process would then begin, where each piece of data was scrutinized for validity and
reasonableness. The simplest of errors would trigger a process of telephone calls and paper exchanges. There was considerable overhead to
ensuring data integrity.
|
|
Solution:
|
Developed one application for client-physicians and staff that would allow entry of clinical data. A battery of domain and reasonableness tests was
performed on all data before it was accepted. The entry of data was seen to be a cooperative effort, requiring both the client-physican and staff to agree before
the data was considered final. Coordination of data entered at the client site and at client was accomplished via import/export of database
transaction logs.
A second application was developed to synchronize changes from the master application database with the data maintained in a ClinTrial Oracle
database.

Sun was interested in penetrating IBM's PL/I application server market. A 3rd party PL/I compiler was available for the Solaris platform but its PL/I
syntax differed from IBM's. A further complicating factor was that IBM had coded a number of processing-intensive operations in hardware.
|
|
Solution:
|
Developed a PL/I code interpreter and converter using lex & yacc that allowed programs written in an IBM dialect to compile on a Sun platform with the Liant
compiler. Code optimizations (such as data type changes and calls to external C routines) were automatically performed to offset the performance
advantages of IBM's micro-coded instructions.

STSC, Inc.
|
|
In its prime, STSC (originally Scientific Time Sharing Corporation) was the largest U.S. supplier of APL-based time-sharing services and software. From 1974
to 1982, the company grew from 30 to 300 employees, with two dozen offices in the US, Europe and the Orient. Sales of its APL*PLUS® products and
services peaked at over $27 million/year. Due to the impact of the personal computer on the mainframe time-sharing business, the company suffered a major
down-sizing in 1984. It subsequently repurposed its business and was known as Manugistics, Inc. and was frequently
mentioned by investment analysts. In recent years, Manugistics was acquired by the JDA Software Group, Inc.

Consulting Projects of Note
|
At the request of Polaroid's chief scientist, developed computer
simulations of 3 circuits that calculated the distance from the camera to the subject of a picture using ultrasound. The circuit that provided the most consistent
estimation of distance and was subsequently used in the One Step® camera for many years. The circuit was also sold separately and was used by MIT's Media Lab in their robotics research. Amateur robotic engineers also found the circuit to be valuable and have
described how to modify the circuit here and here. Some of MIT's Media Lab's work may be found here.

investment vehicles. Principal in extensive on-site interviews with senior international security traders in Washington, D.C. and Boston to
develop functional specifications. Pioneered an approach to system architecture that resulted in substantial savings in development
effort. Architect for the product's database manager.
|
|
|
Designed, developed and marketed a system for
managing bank liability portfolios (Certificates of Deposit, Repurchase Agreements). Performed the premiere installation, providing conversion,
customer training and technical support, resulting in the site serving as a showcase for the division. Established pricing strategy for product,
provided documentation planning and developed a marketing kit for the sales division.

design of the Backup Flight Control
System. Validated proper operation of the air data computer which was used to compute roll, pitch, yaw, airspeed and air temperature from data received from a
noseboom used during the OV-101 test flights.
Although only 25 years old, Mr. Flanigan was given the responsibility for the planning, specification of engineering support services and execution of the integration
testing of the backup flight control software with the Space Shuttle avioinics and simulator in the Avionics Development Laboratory, completing the effort well ahead of

Central Massachusetts Search and Rescue Team (CMSART)
|
|
Wilderness EMT, Founding Board Member, Training Coordinator (4 years)
|
|
CMSART, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency rescue services to any person who is lost, stranded or infirmed in an outdoor wilderness
setting. The principal operating area is the 91 cities and towns in central Massachusetts and the 134 state parks (2.6 million wooded acres) run by the Massachusetts
Department of Environmental Management. The team regularly works with organizations outside of this region and outside of the state.
The team was composed strictly of certified EMTs, Paramedics or First Responders. Many members were NASAR certified Search Managers. All members were skilled in land navigation (map and compass) and
were comfortable with spending 24-hours on their own in a wilderness setting . In the early 1990s, CMSART was the largest organization of trained ground searchers in the
state. The team was also capable of performing night-time searches.
Over a 4 year period, the team was activated several dozen times for lost persons, missing children, downed planes and body recoveries and was credited with saving at
least one life.
