General Notes: Good morning all from Linda Lawson, July 1, 2006,
A little Bio of our immigrant ancestor, Dea. John Pearson from Early Settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts pg. 272-273: Dea. John Pearson was not of the first company but a very early settler, probably 1643. It is a tradition in the family that he was a native of Yorkshire, England. The date of his birth is not known, though probably before 1610. His name is first mentioned on the Rowley records in the birth record of his first child, 1643. He was made freeman, 26 May 1647, and ordained deacon of the Rowley Church, 24 Oct , 1686.
The acre and half house lot laid out to him in the second division of house lots, about 1645, was situated on the east side of Holme St, south of Richard Leighton's lot and about 100 rods north of the first meeting house. This was is home until about 1667 when he moved to "The Mills," the chief seat of his business and property. This lot is now owned (1932) by heirs of Calvin R. Titcomb. Where the old county road (the Bay Road) leading from Rowley to Newbury crosses Mill River and where the fresh water mingles with the salt water is the site of the first mills in Rowley. Here, soon after the settlement of the town, probably as early as 1642, Thomas Nelson built a grist mill and a saw mill, and here, by 1643, John Pearson had built a fulling or clothiers mill, the first in New England. He operated these mills, having purchased the the grist mill and saw mill, until his death in 1693. The fulling mill continued to be operated by the Pearson family until 1809.
The grist mills, later called the Glen Mill, together with a large landed estate, passed from father to son in undisturbed descent to John Pearson, who died in 1816. These mills passed from the Pearson family to the Dummer family in 1817 and were operated by them until destroyed by fire in 1916, when the business was removed to Newburyport. Many of the first settlers of Rowley were weavers. Johnson, in his "Wonder-Working Providence" (London, 1654), says of the Rowley people: "These people being industrious every way, soon built many houses, to the number of three-score families , and were the first that set upon making Cloth, in this Western World; for which end they built a fulling mill, and caused their little ones to be very diligent in spinning cotton-wood, many of them being clothiers in England." Gov. Winthrop, under date of "12th of Fourth month, 1643" says: "Our supplies from England failing much men began to look about them, and fell to a manufacture of cotton, whereof we had a store from Barbadoes, and of hemp and flax; wherein Rowley, to their great commendation exceeded all other towns."
The quantity of cloth made by the Rowley people can never be accurately determined, but as Dea. Pearson's mill for fulling cloth was the only one in Eastern Massachusetts for nearly fifty years, an account of some of the work done there is of interest. Two of his ledgers for the years between 1672 and 1688 have been preserved and show the number of yards of cloth fulled by him, except such as was paid for on delivery. The quantity charged between the above dated was 64,087 yards, and probably that paid for at the time of delivery was half as much more, making a total of about 100,000 yards. Of lthe 104 families named by Gage as forming the entire population of Rowley in 1680, 103 had accounts with Dea. Pearson for cloth dressing. Although his best patrons, these were not his only ones. His ledgers contain accounts with 618 individuals from almost every town in Essex County and vicinity.
From the many and responsible civil offices with which his townsment honored him we infer that he was highly esteemed as a prudent man in the management of affairs. He was often moderator of town meetings, selectmen and assessor, and for nine sessions of the Great and General Court at Boston he attended as deputy from Rowley. In the year 1687 he, with others, in resisting the tyranny of Govenor Andros, was cited to appear before the Court in Boston, where he was fined and imprisoned for "nearly two weeks."
John Pearson was by trade a carpenter; in all recorded deeds, wlth one exception, he is so designated, never clothier or cloth-dresser. After the occupation and purchase of the Nelson saw and grist mills he was once styled "miller". He brought with him to Rowley his wife, Dorcas. Her maiden name in unknown; they lived together fifty years. He died 22 Dec. 1693. She died 12 Jan 1702-3. More than two years before his death he gave the larger part of his property to his children. He conveyed "my now dwelling house" to his youngest child Stephen.

General Notes: Descendants of Mary Chandler
Generation No. 1
1. MARY3 CHANDLER (ROGER2, ROGER1)1,2,3,4,5,6 was born January 7, 1671/72 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA6,7, and died August 14, 1759 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA8,9. She married JOHN HEALD III10,11,12,12,13 December 18, 1690 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA14,15,16,17,18, son of JOHN HEALD and SARAH DEAN. He was born September 19, 1666 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA19,20, and died November 25, 1721 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA21,22,23.
When John Heald came from Berwick-On-Tweed, Scotland, in 1635, it is understood that his oldest son John, was verging on manhood, yet he did not marry Sarah Deane till June 10, 1661, or twenty-six years after.
The name of their oldest child was also John, born in 1666, and he married Mary Chandler, of Chelmsford, Mass., and settled in that part of Carlisle, Mass., which was then a portion of Concord.
His residence about 1688 to 1695, was near the present Mansion House of Major Benjamin F. Heald, about one and one-half miles southerly of Carlisle Centre, near the westerly road to Concord.
Mr. Heald says she signed her name by a cross, but yet was of great intelligence in the common affairs of life. Though so courageous and able, she was gentle, tender and kind. she was greatly respected and beloved by all who knew her. She was the most influential woman in the region, and died greatly mourned at the age of ninety years.
She had a son, born in 1711, named Ephraim, who was one of the first settlers of Townsend, Mass.,and who died in 1802, aged 91 years. He was a noted hunter.
His oldest son, named Ephraim, also, became in 1757, the first settler fo Temple, NH and owner of Heald Mountain, which he kept for his hunting ground and which is so conspicuously seen from the highlands surrounding Lowell on every side. In him the pioneer qualities of his grandmother, Mary Chandler Heald, seem to have been greatly multiplied, and the history of his life is as romantic as that of Daniel Boone.

Notes for JOHN HEALD III:
After the death of John Heald II, John III inherited a part interest which his father had acquired in the Adams mill, and for a time the mill was jointly operated by James Adams and John Heald III,. In 1700 John III bought all the Adams property including the Adams interest in the mill. Pg 16. CHH.

John Heald III house stood across from James Adams. Pg 20. CHH.
From, "The History of Acton", Pg 17
"From 1686-1689 the governor and his council had laid taxes without consulting the taxpayers, fees for the transaction of public business were unduly increased, and town meetings, except once a year for the election of officers, were prohibited.
All these practices and edicts were flagrant violations of the old charter. Even so it is possible that open insurrection might have been avoided had not Andros, undoubtedly acting under orders from the home government, declared all land titles null and void. In vain did the colonists argue purchase from the Indians. In vain did they assert that those who had cleared the land and defended it with their lives had the most just claim to it. He replied that he cared no more for an Indian signature than for "the scratch of a bear's paw". To the claim of long occupation he answered that no length of possession could validate a grant from one who had no title.
Just when the colonists were seething under this crowning indignity word came that Andro's master, James II, was being pushed from the throne by William of Orange with the backing of England's Protestants. Here indeed was a rare opportunity to liquidate the detested Andros. Accordingly on the morning of April 19, 1689 (prophetic day in American History) the Concord military company under the command of LIEUTENANT JOHN HEALD started for Boston to assist in the revolt.
The insurrection was an immediate success. Andros and his supporters became prisoners of old Simon Bradstreet, last governor to be elected under the charter. "
