Here we are surveying one of the bogues for manatees. We'd slowly cruise until we (usually Landy) spotted a manatee. Then we'd stop, observe the behavior, and take environmental data.
This manatee is coming up for a breath. This is about as close as we saw them. Unlike the Florida manatees, the ones here aren't used to people or boats and will readily swim away.
Here's one that did come close to the boat. We were stopped and anchored at the time and it nearly swam beneath the boat. That's Katie leaning over the side to get a good look.
One of the other jobs we had was taking seagrass samples at various locations and doing grass density studies. Here, Liz and Casey are sorting and analyzing one of the samples we took. If you like playing in the mud, and who doesn't, this is fun.
Well, here we all are. From the left: Landy (our guide), me, Rick, Casey in front patting Nina the Very Pregnant Dog, Sandra, Liz, Pam (intern on the project), Jerry (Landy's son), Katie (P.I.), and Jack. The other P.I, Caryn, had to leave early for the birth of her granddaughter.
This is Caryn. She usually slept in a hammock by the hut and had the best bed on the island!
