Dear Friends,

The next meeting of the Historical Society will be Friday, February 22nd. It will be at 7:30PM in the Senior Center and will feature two videos from our own collection. One is an interview with Hazel Forsberg with an introduction by her daughter, Sally Forsberg Cody. Hazel was born in 1896 and died at the age of 101.We are pleased to announce that Sally will be joining us at the meeting to share memories of her mother and father, Hazel and Clarence Forsberg.  Also in attendance will be Paul Lofty who produced and donated to the Society, the video of Hazel.

The other video is about Taylor Lyford’s collection of Indian arrowheads. Polly Marquis, Joan Shanahan, and Mary Delaney will serve refreshments.

We welcome new member Sandra Bravo.  If you know of new people in town, let us know.   We would be glad to send them a program list or you can direct them to this web site.

Please return your volunteer hours form. When we start applying for grants we may be able to use hours of volunteer time as a match for financial assistance. Include time spent preparing refreshments, participation in Miscoe Hill School historical panels, art show time, telephone committee time, and time spent preparing the newletter for mailing.  Anything you do for the society should be included.

At our January annual meeting, we honored three “unsung heroes” for their work for the Society: Tom Bair for the time and often frustrating efforts involved in getting our non-profit status; Doris Rooney for the many years spent typing and maintaining the card catalog; and Myrtle Swanson for updating and maintaining our newspaper scrapbooks. A big THANK YOU to them all.

A computer committee has been preparing to enter an index of our collection into the computer. This will help to better organize and maintain the collection. It will also help researchers access the information in our files. In preparation for this, Dick Amato is copying the card catalog files. We need volunteers who have a computer at home to input the information. This would be done at your own pace. If you can give any time with this project, please contact Tom Bair.

When we have panels or local speakers about Upton’s history we would like to tape them. We need two people who usually attend meetings to take turns doing this. If you can help, please contact Millie Morin.  We have the tape recorder and would supply the tapes.

I hope to see you all on the 22nd.

        Carol
