Narrative History
The Pine Grove Cemetery, also known as the Old Second Cemetery, is the town’s second burying ground. It was first set aside for this purpose and laid out in 1756 but it was slow to be cleared and prepared for the reception of the dead. It’s earliest burial dates to 1804 and it’s last to 1949. Upton family markers from the first half of the nineteenth century include the Childs, Gore, Beal, Rawson, Lackey, Sadler and Holbrook. The cemeteries stones have been inventoried and 788 marked graves were identified.
