intro

The John Crowley Pictorial Bibliography represents my attempt to catalog the variant editions/printings of the published works of John Crowley, in both the United States and Great Britain. A variant is any reprint of a book (hard cover or paperback) that represents a change of any sort  from the previous printing to the covers of that book. The books are listed chronologically. I've included all data I thought relevant, including the publisher, year and month of publication, edition/printing and date of printing, format (hardcover or paper), price, ISBN #, and cover art illustrator. I've relied, in most cases, on my own copies of the books for all of the information listed. Where I was in doubt, or didn't have the actual copy of the book in hand (there are one or two variants I don't have), I've referred to The Locus Index to Science Fiction 1984-1998, and The Internet Speculative Fiction Database, and various individual book sellers who specialize in Crowley's work. In particular, I should like to think Mr Ken Lopez, who is the administrator of Mr Crowley's literary estate, for taking the time to answer emails and for past kindnesses.

This site is primarily a bibliographic resource for book collectors and readers who may be interested in seeing all of the different covers for John Crowley's books. This site does not currently offer a great deal of personal information on Mr Crowley, but will soon.

This page is also completely unofficial and unauthorized. The content is my own and does not necessarily represent the approval of Mr Crowley himself. All errors on these pages are mine, and I welcome corrections, further info, or scans of covers of books I don't have (yet).

updates

Last updated 08.12.2004

08-12-04 Added two new entries and images for Engine Summer, the British first hard cover (1980) and paperback (1982) editions, to the books page. These are more books I acquired while this site was down for a couple years, and forgot to include. Check back for more new entries.

08-08-04 Added a new book: An Earthly Mother Sits and Sings to the books page. This is a small chapbook published by DreamHaven Books in Minneapolis, MN for the World Fantasy Convention in October of 2000. There are two illustrations by Charles Vess (who did the marvelous illustrations for Neil Gaiman's Stardust), plus he did the cover. This is a 14 page fantasy story which at the time had not appeared anywhere else. I've been meaning to add this, but kept forgetting.

08-07-04 The ephemera page is finally open and includes a copy of the original pre-publication letter sent out by Bantam Books for Little, Big in 1981. This letter accompanied the big pink (and rare) advance reading copy of the book, which was sent to reviewers in the summer of 1981. More items like this and other ephemera will be added soon.

The books page has been reformatted in proper bibliographic style with numeric and alphabetic references.

This site is going through a major design overhaul. Much more information on books and Crowley himself will finally be added. Keep checking back!

Links to other pages are now open (see the navigation bar at the top of the page), though some pages are not complete. Updated the books page with information and scans of Novelties and Souvenirs: Collected Short Fiction, and the Easton Press limited edition of Little, Big. Also added links to Microsoft Reader E-book editions of Aegypt and Love and Sleep. Fixed a few broken links to full-size images of Daemonomania.

01-10-04 This page has been down for almost three years. Some sections still need to be redone. At present only the books section is still complete with pictures of all various editions of Crowley's books. Comments and suggestions welcome!
