Jim's Place - 2007 Layout so far... (updated 5/9/07)
Here are some pictures of my 2007 layout with my most recent purchases. First is my Moe and Joe Postwar Celebration car from Lionel. When stopped over an operating track, this car can be activated so that it looks like the men are pushing boards off the stack. The boards are intended to land in a black tray that was included. There is an electromagnet in the Lionel O-27 Uncoupling/Operating Track section.

I got this for Christmas 2006! I also got two Lionel O-27 Uncoupling/Operating Track sections, some fiber pins used to electrically isolate sections of track, and a 1983 version of the Lionel 464 Operating Sawmill accessory (which I won on Ebay for $40). It is missing one of the boards, but had all the logs. The logs sit in a tray on the right side. As the accessory works, making grinding noises, the logs feed into the building in the middle and "finished" planks come sliding out the left side and fall into a little pile! It's pretty cool!

I intend to get my hobo stuff from the basement in the next week or so and add it to this layout. I'll have the handcar going around that separate circle of track, which I will put on a higher level in the middle/back of the layout with some tunnel entrances.
In addition to the sawmill and the Moe and Joe car, my operation has three old postwar 3461 log dump cars. These were made in about 1952. There are a few spots of rust and I also need to lubricate the mechanisms, which are a little "sticky", and replace some tiny springs in a couple of the couplers.

When parked over the operating track section, the electromagnet activates a piston under that plate upon which the logs sit. This dumps over to the right (as pictured) and the stakes fold down, allowing the logs to roll off. These are not the original Lionel logs and are too skinny, but the guy from whom I bought these cars on ebay made them to replace the missing original logs so they were free. I have about 10 original logs and about 15 of these replacements now - nearly a forest! New Postwar Celebration versions of these cars are not made out of the same heavy steel and they cost about $60 to $80. I got these for just about $30 each. So, if I have to do a little work on them it will be worth it, plus I think it's fun to tinker with this stuff! I'm thinking of getting more Postwar stuff.
I am going to repaint this 0-6-0 Dockside Switcher, which I also won on Ebay:

It was from a recent Ready to Run train set that someone broke down and sold in pieces. The Copper Range Set was actually a mine car set and was apparently a very good seller for Lionel! I only bought the locomotive and caboose, but here is the entire set, as pictured in their catalog:

Finally, I am currently using the Christmas 2006 track I set up. It fits nicely on the temporary table (an old dining room table we picked up a few years ago) until I get the basement finished. Then, I'll put in a layout in the corner of the play room and along one wall!

I'm adding a spur to take logs to the sawmill, though.
5/9/07 - I've got a couple new purchases:
Transylvania Tank Car

Lionel Lines 4-4-2 Locomotive and Tender - great puller!
