Over the next 350 years there will be 90 colonization attempts (not
necessarily by Earth) in the region of Kepler's star. Of these, 59
successfuly will reach their intended planets, 14 will not reach
their destinations due to accidents or in some cases sabotage, and
no record remains of 17. By 2371, only 9 established colonies will
remain viable. The Intellivore will be responsible for most of
these disappearances [TNG #45].

The first Tellarite experiments using a form of interstellar ramjet are
begun [FASA].

Evidence of life is found on Mars in the form of skeletal structures of
silicon-based insect-like creatures. Several million years old by silicon
isotope dating, these 3 x 1 centimeter samples are discovered following a

three month long sandstorm. Science Officer Dr. John Oppenheimer trans-
mits his findings to Earth, in accordance with Article 1 of the United
Space Initiative [SFC].

Topaline (Element 117) is discovered on Ganymede, the third moon of
Jupiter (Sol V). It will in later years become vital for the life
support systems of planetoid colonies and starships [MRM, FC, SFD].

The inhabitants of Krantin develop nuclear power during this era and
deduce that the Plague is composed of radioactive components. The Plague
begins to develop in the Kantinese asteroid belt as a form of nebular
dust, eventually blocking out the sun [TNG #36].

2022
The Bajoran wormhole again undergoes subspace inversion [DSN 476].

Experiments with new power sources over the next four years leads to the
development of two DY-300 prototype vessels. Experimental test drones for
the new ion-impulse drive, they will be tested till 2029 [DYC].

The U.N.S.S. "Courageous" (a DY-500 "Wheeler" class explorer), commanded
by Captain Fitzsimmons Wallabee, cannot return home thus becoming the
worst tragedy in the 65 year history of Terran spaceflight. This
incident, caused by a flare penetrating a shielding flaw, leads to the
upgrading of all design and safety standards for forthcoming ships. With
fused fiber-optic computer tubes and fission magnetochamber feed valve,
the "Courageous" accelerates out of the Sol system, with her fuel supply
eventually exhaused at a final velocity of 0.86c--according to Engineering
Officer Haddad Koire's log [SFC].

First contact occurs between the Andorian Empire and the remnants of
the Vegan Tyranny, a mysterious race of beings whose origins and
physical appearance have never been determined. Some scholars suggest
that the Vegan Tyranny were cybernetic rather than organic. At this
time, they had lost much of their original power and influence, though
it is not known how. The war between this race and the Andorians
rages off and on for many years. Due to the Andorians, the Vegan
Tyranny fails to regain their empire, and they all but disappear after
2090 [FASA].

In the "Mirror" universe: The invention of the fusion torch accelerates
the development of fusion powered space propulsion systems and extends
Khan's cold supremacy into the equally cold vacuum of interstellar space
[TBoT #14].

During this period, Sanctuary Districts exist in every major city in the
United States: depositories for people without jobs or places to live
[DSN 457].

2023
On Mercury (Sol I), two new elements are discovered: Celebium (Element
113) and Pergium (Element 111), two trans-hahnic radioactives.
Celebium is found to emit a unique form of particle radiation fatal
to Humans. In the future, large quantities of celebium will be
found on Camus II, evidently the decay product of an ancient
thermonuclear war. Pergium, in later years, will be used in many fission
reactors and will be in great demand. A pergium PXK reactor will be
installed on the Janus VI mining facility in the early 23rd Century.
In the late 24th Century in the Delta Quadrant, the "Voyager" will
consider pergium as a bartering commodity [MRM, TI, DD].

Fusion propulsion is given increased research and development funding
to speed its feasibility in Terran spaceship use. The first
interstellar fusion engines will be fired in a cometary body which
will in time become Starbase 1 [SFC, DSN #16].

Over the period of five years, four baseball teams have gone bankrupt
and another eight have changed hands a total of nineteen times [TNG #15].

2024
The Irish Reunification occurs on Earth: terrorism wins out [TNG 160].

After seven years of maneuvering, Alex Charon takes over direct control
of India. His plan is to now aid supermen in other nations to gain power
in their own lands. Since the powerful and socially secure Western
powers are not about to hand themselves over to superman rule, Charon
turns his attention instead to the Third World [TBoT #2].

30 August
Transported by the "Defiant's" (NX-74205) malfunctioning transporter in
2371, Commander Sisko, Dr. Bashir, and Lt. Dax find themselves in San
Francisco on Earth. Sisko and Bashir are recruited into District 'A'

The Bell Riots occur: one of the most violent civil disturbances in
American history. In San Francisco, Sanctuary District 'A', hundreds of
Sanctuary residents are killed in riots after taking over the district
and taking hostages. Gabriel Bell sacrifices his own life to shield the
hostages. Outrage over his death will change public opinion about the
Sanctuaries, eventually resulting in their abolishment. The U.S. will
begin to correct its social problems because of this event--a pivotal
moment in history. Commander Sisko and Dr. Bashir indirectly cause the
death of Gabriel Bell. To sustain future history, Sisko takes Bell's
place. Chief O'Brien and Major Kira rescue the three missing away team
members, all five returning to the 24th Century [DSN 457, DSN 458,
DSN 480].

In an alternate timeline (owing to the death of Bell), Star Fleet and the
U.F.P. will not be formed. By 2371, the Romulans will have reached Alpha
Centauri and Earth apparently will lack spaceflight capability [DSN 457].

A scientific study gives the proposed Venus Terraforming Project an
unconditional "Go." It will begin in a few years [SFC].

The last of the Earth-Moon liners introduced in 2008 is taken out of
service [SFC].

The uprated "Wheeler" DY-500 series enters service, employing advanced
fission, large lateral ion drive plates, and a complement of 40. They
will be used for asteroid mining and exploration of the moons of the gas
giants, pushing the Human presence to the edge of the solar system [SFC,
STD2].
