Zefram Cochrane begins worrying about his bipolar disorder inhibiting
implant wearing down [ST VIII].

In an alternate timeline: The first warp engine prototype WD-1 propels
Rosy the chimpanzee at warp 1.5 during a successful controlled experiment.
The U.N.S.S. "Fisher," commanded by Captain Richard Hanna, recovers the
prototype at the outer limits of the Pluto Test Area [SFC, FASA, TWF,
GN 2].

In an alternate timeline: First Generation warp drive is developed and
tested by Zefram Cochrane [GN 2].

Construction begins on the Bekeem colony ship, initiated by the third
Supreme Primary Lans [TNG #14].

The Devernians colonize Aronnia via Titans [TCT #6].

In an alterate timeline: Interplanetary high-speed ambulances improve the
survival rates of the severely sick and injured in the Solar System with
quicker access to Earth-based medical facilities. The first of these is
the "Keller" class with a complement of 30 and advanced fusion propulsion
[SFC].

In an alternate timeline: Zefram Cochrane demonstrates a practical warp
drive [TOS #66].

In an alternate timeline: A 100 years in space poll lists encountering
life on Alpha Centauri, the first men on the moon, and the Venus Terra-
forming Project as the three most significant events in Human history
[SFC].

In an alternate timeline: The Xenobiological Probability Study, under-
written by the University of Luna for the United Nations of Terra, is
released. This study concludes mathematically that the chances of
discovering any intelligent non-humanoid life forms within the next
century of exploration are extremely small [FASA].

In an alternate timeline: The "John Cabal," an old lunar ice freighter
refitted as Cochrane's micro-gravity lab, operates out past Neptune where
research is conducted light-hours from Earth's military surveillance nets
and the gravimetric disruptions of the sun's gravity well. A prototype
fluctuation-superimpellor device of massive proportions succeeds in
allowing an unmanned flight test vehicle to straddle the speed of light
"wall," alternating between two velocity states while remaining at neither
for longer than Planck time--reaching 8 times the speed of light. Present
during this breakthrough along with Zefram Cochrane is Sternbach, Okuda,
and Micah Brack (a.k.a. Flint the Immortal) [GN 18, NTM].

The "Liberty" class enters service. Each ship having a complement of 39
and advanced fusion propulsion. The U.N.S.S. "Bon Homme Richard" will be
the most famous ship of this class. The design is very similar to the
much later "Orion" class scout ships, possessing the unique exposed warp
field coils aft. The "Orion" class is much smaller, carrying a crew of 15
and life support for 3 years. These high mortality rate "Orion" scouts
will enter service much later [SFC, STD2].
