Explorer Brochure

You will have 2-3 weeks to create a brochure about a European who explored the New World. You will be given class time and should also work on this at home. Your brochure will be on 9 X 12 paper, folded into three equal sections, each section four inches across. Your brochure must have both information and artwork and should include the following:

  1. Introduction
    • The name of your explorer
    • Why he is famous
  2. Early life
    • When and where was your explorer born?
    • Tell about your explorer's family, education, or other interesting facts about his early life
  3. Reasons for exploration
    • For whom did he explore?
    • What was he looking for?
  4. Discoveries--give details
    • Where and when did he explore?
    • What method of transportation did your explorer use?
    • What was the effect of climate and geography on his exploration?
    • People encountered
    • Plants, animals, landforms encountered
    • Riches, discoveries, or other things found
  5. Legacy--this is your conclusion
    • When and where did your explorer die?
    • How did he change the world?
  6. Suggestions for artwork:
    • Picture of your explorer (what he may have looked like)
    • Other appropriate artwork (ships, navigational instruments, tools, clothing, weapons, specific spices, landforms enountered, or other discoveries)
  7. You must include a map of your explorer's route, which will probably use a large amount of space on your brochure. Artwork must be hand drawn. No computer generations.
Line

You will give a short oral presentation on your explorer. You should be able to show your explorer's route on the classroom maps. Your brochure and presentation will be evaluated in the following areas:
  • Accuracy of information
  • In-depth knowledge of encounters with new areas and peoples
  • Includes information about routes and means of transportation
  • Discusses effects of weather, climate, and geography
  • Writing is clear and well organized. Grammar and punctuation are basically correct.
  • Map shows planning and is in color, with labels and attention to detail
  • Brochure demonstrates understanding of importance of this exploration
Ask to see examples of brochures created by former students.
