The Wood Plates

The front and back of the violin start out from quarter-sawn slabs. Pictured here is curly maple imported from Germany to be used as a violin back. A quarter-sawn slab is split and bookmatched. After joining the two sides by a center seam, the plate is carved down to the rough size and shape of the violin back.
