United Way Donations and The Boy Scouts

Nancy Wilkinson met with Juan Johnson (VP of Diversity). The purpose was to talk about whether or not there is a policy about advertising and diversity issues. If so, we wanted our issues to be included in the policy. No such policy exists in a written or stated form. But, the Company makes every effort to be sensitive to diversity issues. The Diversity Council is taking the lead in making associates aware of diversity concerns so that they can be addressed early in any given situation.

They spoke briefly about the United Way campaign. Nancy expressed our concern that this would not be a good time for the United Way rally to highlight the Boy Scouts. Juan assured Nancy that Ingrid Saunders Jones and the others involved with the United Way are very aware of the Boy Scout issue.

The United Way in Atlanta has refused to pull support from the Boy Scouts (because they feel it's important to support diversity in the metro area!) See the United Way site at http://unitedwayatl.org/learn/news/scout.htm.

It is up to each of us to decide how we will participate in this year's United Way rally. One option is to give your money directly to the charities you want and give nothing to the United Way this year. You can also give to the United Way with the instructions that they cannot give any of the money to the Boys Scouts. But then those donations without restrictions will be routed to the Boys Scouts instead. The Boys Scouts do some good things, but the fact that they operate in a climate of intolerance and hatred more than negates the good they do.
