HOMEWORK POLICY

The most important thing to remember is that homework counts as part of your grade and therefore it is important that it is completed when it is assigned.  Homework assignments that are turned in late unless you have been ill, will not count.

Eighth grade English students will have a variety of homework assignments throughout the year.  These assignments will range from drills in grammar and vocabulary to long term writing assignments.

Throughout the year students will have traditional grammar assignments in the use of standard American English.  These assignments culminate in a chapter quiz or test.  Students are also responsible for ten vocabulary words every week.  They will be expected to keep a vocabulary notebook throughout the year.  They will be quizzed weekly.  The vocabulary notebook will be graded each quarter.

Writing projects are a primary focus for eighth grade students.  Students will engage in writing assignments in description, narration, exposition, and argumentation.  A typical writing unit consists of a brainstorming, drafting, and revision stage.  Much of this drafting and revision begins in class and should continue at home.  Time necessary for this work at home varies from student to student.

There is also a literature component in eighth grade English.  Much of the literature studied in eighth grade is integrated with the study of American history.  While studying literature, students will have assignments in comprehension and analysis.  In addition, at least one book report a quarter is assigned to students.
