Lace being made on a cylinder style pillow.
This type of pillow is the best for making long straight lace, as by using two peices of pricking and "leap frogging" them as the pillow is rotated, any length of lace can be made without the need to move up the lace by unpinning it.
The lace shown is my own design combining traditional spider and fan Torchon motifs with hearts worked as fans and in the body of the lace.
The pillow is made by sewing a tube, closing one side with a circle of cloth, then padding with straw stuffed around a coffee can center, then a second circle closing the the contents inside. I wrapped the resulting pillow with a felt strip to get the exact diameter I wanted, then made a covering with a drawstring than could be removed if needed.
