Zenith 6-S-341 RESTORATION

Restoration of a Zenith chairside. The radio is a 1939 model with 3 bands and 6 tubes. The veneer is walnut.

The radio was stored in an out building with an earthen floor or under the house on the ground. Termites had colonized the cabinet, mice had made a home under the chassis and the high humidity of the mid atlantic states had delaminated the cabinet. I started the restoration by removing the chassis, speaker, bezel and then I disassembled the cabinet. Once I had the cabinet apart I glued the loose joints, used body filler to fill in where the termites had destroyed. I purchased poplar boards at Home Depot for use in making the molding that was missing. Matte material from a picture frame shop to reproduce the back for the grill cloth.

The back and feet of the cabinet was to far gone, so I made a new one out of 5/16 plywood and veneered it with walnut .

Here is what the finished cabinet looks like now,  with the chassis restored and performing great!
