I had been asked to teach color wash classes and was trying to devise a technique to let people get started without being overwhelmed. The repetition of the 4 squares creates an interesting effect but gives you a defined pattern to follow. This technique was featured in an article called Colorwash Lesson published in Traditional Quilter.
When the center was done it didn't stand well on its own. By extending the pattern into the corners the piece gained more visual interest. The border fabric in this piece was dyed by Caryl Bryer Fallert.
