Annie's General Groceries Reviews
bluebar

General grocery stuff.    The boring things we buy frequently without really thinking about, that generally keep us alive.    These are the the things that might not be glamourous or heavily advertised, but given how many times we reach for them when we shop, it certainly helps to be making wise choices.

Eggbeaters: 4 stars.
I like eggs, and they are pretty good choice for those of us who are on a diet.    Sure, they have a modest amount of fat in them, but they pack good nutrition too.    I often made them part of my evening meal, scrambling some up with various veggies, and topping with salsa.    I checked out the nutritional panel on a carton of eggbeaters and found that they have about half the calories of real eggs.    This was just too good not to try.    I find that when cooked with other ingredients and topped with salsa, they taste pretty much the same as real eggs, though perhaps a tad more rubbery in texture.    Still, I can't say that I enjoyed them any less.    Eggbeaters do cost more than eggs though, even if you factor in throwing away the yolks if you do that to cut calories.    Personally, I could never bring myself to throw the yolk away... that's the good part!    I think the fact that they dye them a plausible yellow color helps with the "they *are* eggs" perception.   All in all, I think they are a reasonable, helpful substitute for real eggs.   Note: I've also tried the lesser known brands (Better Than Eggs, I think? and also Prairie Farms No Cholesterol Fat Free Egg Product) and found them to pretty much the same as Eggbeaters, though at a slightly lower cost.

Laughing Cow Light Swiss Cheese: 5 stars.
I like cheese.    I like to just gnaw on a piece of it, plain.    Problem, cheese tends to be pretty high in fat and calories.    Solution, Laughing Cow light Swiss Cheese.    Smooth, good flavored, and very creamy, this is the cheese to have if you have to have cheese on a diet.    How the heck can a 3/4th ounce chunk of the stuff only have 35 calories?    I suspect magic is involved.    I really do.

Kangaroo Pita Bread: 5 stars.
I eat the honey wheat kind.    These pitas make an excellent base for some of the recipes I've come to rely on for my new way of eating.    Filling, hearty, and tasty, these are a great way to eat your bread without feeling too guilty about doing so.    They also crisp up nicely in the toaster oven, and get nice and soft if you warm them in the microwave instead.    I even like them cold.    A good, versatile product that is now a staple on which I live.
