EDUCATION

Education is a critical foundation for all our children. Those with a strong educational background are more likely to learn a skill, continue to college, obtain good-paying jobs and have successful careers. It is our responsibility to offer every child the opportunity to get a good education through public schools. Taking money away from public schools is unacceptable. If elected, I would work to ensure that more emphasis is placed on early learning, alternative education, and affordable college.

I do not support the use of vouchers. I do not support public tax dollars to support religious schools. Every child deserves the opportunity to get a quality education in our public schools. Vouchers would take away much-needed funding for public schools.  Rather than penalizing schools that don’t make the grade, we need to help them improve how they operate so that they can offer a top-notch education.

Property taxes should not be viewed as the primary source of school funding. However, there is still great resistance to an income or sales. We need to meet in the middle and determine how to fund appropriately. I believe we will find the answers needed by working together to find solutions.

HEALTH CARE

Healthcare is the most complicated and important issues of our time.  We need more support for preventative, innovative, and affordable healthcare. Greater focus needs to be placed on preventative healthcare and wellness. By doing so, we can eliminate costly healthcare problems before they develop. The recent breakthroughs in stem cell research help to demonstrate how innovative healthcare solutions can benefit all citizens. Affordable healthcare should be available to every citizen.

I support extending the life of the health care subsidy for retirees. Investing retirement funds in the stock market is obviously risky business. I would not recommend support this kind of  investment. If a commitment of health care benefits during retirement was made to the employees, it should be kept.

The potential cuts in Medicaid funding are disheartening as this program provides invaluable services and support for many of New Hampshire’s residents. I believe that we need to include our citizens in the discussion and look at all of our options. More importantly, we need to have leadership with the foresight not to put our country and states into this position.

ENVIRONMENT

In regards to environmental issues, I believe that we need to reward people who make a concerted effort to protect and conserve our natural resources. Some ways to accomplish this include offering rebates for use of fuel efficient cars, solar powered homes, and other products that conserve energy. In addition, we need to continue developing alternative forms of fuel and energy.
