Ridings, William J., Jr. and Stuart B. McIver (1997-49)
Rating the Presidents (rule) A Ranking of U.S. Leaders, From the
Great and Honorable to the Dishonest and Incompetent William J.
Ridings, Jr. and Stuart B. McIver A Citadel Press Book Published
by Carol Publishing Group [Secaucus, NJ, 1997]
Book, cloth, 9-1/4" x 6-1/4", x (2)
p., 306 pp., illus. $22.95. An interesting book that ranks the
Presidents, from Washington to Clinton, on leadership qualities,
accomplishments and crisis management, political skill, appointments,
character and integrity, and a composite or overall ranking. Rankings
were developed by polling several hundred academicians from colleges
and universities nationwide. Only 3% of those polled were non-academics,
as the general population were judged to be unable to place presidential
performance in a historical context (ahem!). While results will
please students of Abraham Lincoln, some may disagree with the
evaluation of later presidents due to a perceived liberal bias
of the sample.

Silvers, Robert, Michael Hawley, editor (1997-63)
Photomosaics Robert Silvers Edited by Michael Hawley An Owl Book
· Henry Holt and Company · New York [1997]
Book, paper, 12" x 9", xii p., 81 pp.,
illus. To call this book "Lincolniana," is quite a stretch-even
by my standards. It is a collection of "photomosaics,"
illustrations created by combining thousands of small photographs.
On pages 12-15, one will find a portrait of Lincoln composed of
numerous other Civil War images. It must really be seen to be
believed. I include it in this listing in the hope that this remarkable
image will not be lost to future Lincoln devotees.
