The Company Data File

Each company you work on will have its own Company Data File. This file contains general information about the company, e.g., company name, address, telephone, etc. The Company Data File does not contain any accounting entries or data. All accounting data is stored in the Postgres database files.

You may create a new directory to hold information about each company or you may combine several companies' data under the same directory. We suggest that you should create a new directory for each company you work on (assuming you maintain books for more than one company). That way you will be able to keep other information (letters, notes, contracts, etc.) about that company in one location. (This manual assumes you have created a new directory for each company.)

The first time the BasicBooks General Ledger starts in a company's directory a new sub-directory called, ``codata.d'' will be automatically created. The company's general data will be stored under the codata.d directory.

After the first time you must be located in this same directory (where codata.d is located) in order to access this company's data. That is, your current working directory must be the same directory where codata.d is located in order to access a company's data which was originally set up in this directory.

Under codata.d one additional directory and one data file will be created for the (each) company. The file will be named the same as the Company Code you created to access the company. This is the Company Data File. A directory composed of the Company Code and the suffix, ``.rpts'' will also be found under codata.d. This directory is referred to in this manual as the Default Report Directory. This directory contains the reports you chose to save in a file. You may edit or delete any reports you have saved in the Default Report Directory.

DO NOT DELETE codata.d.

DO NOT DELETE the Default Report Directory.

DO NOT DELETE the Company Data File.
