The "autopsy" of my broken SR revealed that, yes indeed, I had stuck a valve open, which got bent by the piston on the next stroke, and gashed/cracked the piston.  The intake valve was chipped for good measure.  While a new piston and rings were recommended, the cylinder had standard bore, no scoring, so with a mild hone would make it good as new.

Here are some photos of the broken parts.  I'd never seen SR internals before, the components are about small-block Chevy sized, which kind of makes sense...8 of these would be a 4-litre, about a 265 small block.

Stock size SR piston and valves...damaged parts on the trip home. Exhaust valve stuck open, was hit by the piston and bent it. No compression, no go.
Piston and valves, located in piston dome recesses.  Those are 35,000 mile SR parts.

SR500 valves, exhaust on left. Very bent!
Quite a bend in that exhaust valve.  And I don't like the way the seat looks on that intake valve either.  I'd thought about a top-end job this winter...looks like I got one.
